Oily skin is not an issue reserved just for teens, a lot of adults struggle with oily skin too. While oily skin comes with some complexion benefits including the fact that this skin type is not prone much to ageing and wrinkling it also has its fair share of struggles such as keeping your makeup in place without looking shinny. Whereas you can’t really do much about your skin type, all hope is not lost! With specialized skincare, a few beauty hacks and lifestyle changes, you can actually whip your oily skin into shape and keep the excess moisture from ruining your makeup life.
- Use a toner
If you have oily skin, toning should be part of your daily skincare regimen. Toners help to remove excess oil, dirt and traces or grime which makes them most helpful and necessary for people with oily, acne prone skin or for people who generally want extra cleansing after wearing heavy makeup. Using a toner can also be a great way to balance out your skin; if you don’t want to buy a toner, you can easily make one at home using apple cider vinegar. Simply mix 1 part ACV with 2-3 parts water and you have your natural toner.
- Try a clay mask
Clay masks are great for oily and acne prone skin as they help to minimize pores, soak up all traces of oil and dirt and they are super easy to use; just apply some all over your face and have a glass of wine as you wait for it to dry up! You should mask at least once a week however, don’t wait for you mask to reach the hard and flaky stage before rinsing. When you start to see it drying, getting light in color but still feels a bit sticky, that’s the time to wash your face. Leaving the mask on too long can cause irritation and dehydrate your skin.
Even dermatologists insist that it’s very important to keep oily skin moisturized. Most people think that just because you have an oily complexion you can skip moisturizer. The Key to successfully moisturizing oily skin is to look out for oil-free hydrating products that contain hyaluronic acid and glycerin; these add water and keep skin plump without adding more oil to the skin surface.
- Foundation formula
When buying makeup especially foundation, look out for mattifying or long-wearing formulas. These are specifically designed to combat shine; stick foundations are also great for oily skin. Stay away from anything that says dewy finish, luminous and avoid cushion compacts. Another foundation hack is to lightly dust powder on your face after moisturizing and before applying foundation. It sounds crazy but this actually works wonders! Apply your foundation as normal then gently pat on more powder to finish. This will help to keep your face looking matte, of course do not forget to use a matte finish setting spray to even out the look and get rid of the ashy-ness from all the powdering.
- Go for gentle cleansers
Many people tend to use harsh drying products to get rid of excess oil or to exfoliate the skin. This creates an imbalance which only stimulates oil glands further resulting in an oilier complexion. If you have oily skin, you need to ditch such cleansers and use a facial cleanser that contains BHA-beta hydroxyl acid along with AHAs-alpha hydroxyl acids. These ingredients will help remove dead skin from your face without the rough exfoliation and they will give you a smoother more youthful complexion without drying your skin out.
